"This was an event that called for celebration, and for
the standing ovation"
"Extraordinary" and "unforgettable" wrote the Basler Zeitung of conductor Jed Gaylin's all-Mozart performance this November in Basel, Switzerland with the Lodz Philharmonic. "Above all one felt the unconditional devotion with which the players followed Jed Gaylin." The Lodz Tribune (Poland) described him as a conductor who "knows exactly what he wants" and went on to cite in particular excellent tempi, broad dynamic range, precision, and great detail and nuance of color. Jed Gaylin was named Music Director of the Bay-Atlantic Symphony (NJ) in 1997, after an extensive national search and guest concert where he was both the audience and orchestra favorite. His first two years have been marked by great artistic growth in the orchestra: concerts are met with standing ovations and powerful accolades in the press for interpretations of surprising insight, subtlety, and drama. Since 1993 he has drawn high praise for his rare ability to bring people close to music as Music Director of the Johns Hopkins Symphony Orchestra in Baltimore, and from 1992-97, as the Music Director of the Loudoun Symphony in Virginia. An activist for traditional as well as contemporary music, Mr. Gaylin is increasingly noted for his engaging discussions on orchestral repertoire. He has given master classes and lectured extensively at major universities in Moscow, Mexico, Poland, and the United States. Under his leadership, the Bay-Atlantic, Hopkins, and Loudoun Symphonies have sparked thousands of the next generation of listeners with provocative programs of full-length works both in the schools and concert halls. Jed Gaylin continues to receive high marks from audiences, orchestras, and arts organizations as a visionary music director. One upcoming project with the Bay-Atlantic Symphony, a festival of music and drama called Shakespeare Inspired! is a collaboration involving the Symphony, Cape May Stage Director Michael Laird, and high school actors to create music/drama performances for young students. Music from these performances will be expanded and performed again as full-length subscription concerts. The same actors and stage director will present a pre-concert improvisation, performance, and colloquium with Mr. Gaylin. Mr. Gaylin has received numerous awards as a conductor, including a 1995 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for his work abroad championing modern music. In 1995 he was also awarded the position of Fellowship Conductor at the Aspen Music Festival. In 1991 he was Peabody Conservatory's sole recipient of the Presser Music Award. Mr. Gaylin made his European debut in 1992 with the Filharmonia Pomorska in Poland. He continued his tour in Moscow where he conducted the Gnessin Institute Orchestra, as well as the Moscow Chamber Symphony in performances enthusiastically received by audiences and critics alike. Other engagements have included the Naples Philharmonic in Florida, Aspen Concert Orchestra, and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Guanajuato in Mexico. Mr. Gaylin studied conducting at the Peabody Conservatory and piano an conducting at the Oberlin Conservatory. His conducting teachers include Frederik Prausnitz, Jahja Ling, Murry Sidlin, Paul Vermel, and Michel Singher, and Lydia Frumkin for piano. He lives in Baltimore with his wife and son.
