"Guy Few is exactly what the concert stage needs"
Guy Few is a virtuoso. As a powerful pianist and astonishing trumpeter, he delights audiences with his intensity and charm. Montréal's Le Devoir calls him "outrageously gifted" and "quite simply phenomenal." It is no wonder that he is in demand as a soloist and has played with all of Canada's leading orchestras. Guy is equally at home in classical or contemporary genres. Through the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the Canada Council and the Ontario Arts Council, he has had the opportunity to debut new works by Canadian composers including Glen Buhr, Peter Hatch, Melissa Hui, Boyd McDonald and Jacques Hétu. Jacques Hétu's concerto, written for Mr. Few, is available on the Canadian Trumpet Concerti disc with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony conducted by Raffi Armenian (CBC SM 5000). His recent solo CD Exposures (ibs) features traditional and contemporary trumpet recital repertoire, including a new work by Boyd McDonald, Concertpiece for Trumpet and Piano, for one performer. The American Record Guide wrote, "Guy Few shows flexible tone, dazzling technique, and go-for-broke expressive tendencies on both instruments," and they recommended Exposures "with enthusiasm." Guy has won innumerable prizes for piano and trumpet performance. He was a finalist in the CBC Young Performers Competition and the Grand Prize Winner of the CIBC National Music Festival. In 1988 he received the Sylva Gelber Foundation Award from the Canada Council of the Arts when he was chosen as Most Promising Artist in both piano and brass categories. He has been invited as a professor, soloist, principal or recitalist to many festivals including the Festival of the Sound, the Scotia Festival, the Orford Festival, the Guelph Spring Festival, Takefu International Music Festival (Japan) and the Oregon Bach Festival. Born in Saskatchewan, Guy is a gold medal graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo, Ontario and holds a fellowship diploma from Trinity College, London, England. A resident of Elora, Ontario and head of trumpet studies at Wilfrid Laurier University, Guy makes time in his busy schedule for duo work with Canadian artists. He performs and records on a regular basis with accordionist Joseph Petric in Open Line, with world-renowned trombonist Alain Trudel, with soprano/actor Maria Thorburn, and with narrator/director Kathryn DeLory. Guy has appeared on CBC and CTV television broadcasts and is heard regularly on the CBC and American Public Radio. He has recorded for S.N.E., Arsis Classics, Musica Viva, ibs, CBC SM5000 and the Hänssler Classics labels. Reviews
