San Jose Mercury Young Canadian cellist, Denise Djokic, is quickly emerging as one of the brightest musical stars in Canada. She has been a prize winner in several important competitions in Canada and the United States. As Grand Prize Winner of the 1998 Irving M. Klein International String Competition, she has appeared in recital at the San Miguel d'Allende International Music Festival in Mexico, and in San Francisco's Kohl Mansion Series. She was also a featured soloist in several performances with the Santa Cruz and Peninsula Symphonies in California. As a winner of the 1997 Johansen International String Competition, she performed a debut recital at the Sumner Museum in Washington D.C. She was also selected as a recipient of an Arts Recognition and Talent Search Award by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts. In addition, she was chosen as a winner of the Jeunesses Musicales Debut auditions and recently performed a recital on the Debut Series in Montreal. Denise has also been a featured soloist with Symphony Nova Scotia and the National Arts Centre Orchestra. Ms. Djokic was a laureate of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra Young Artist competition and winner of the Suburban Symphony Young Soloist's competition in Cleveland, Ohio. She received the First Prize Award in the Donna Reed Foundation for the Performing Arts Competition and the Fortnightly Music Club Scholarship Prize. Denise has been the recipient of several Nova Scotia Talent Trust Awards, and for the past two years has been awarded the Arthur Barnstead Award which is given to an outstanding Talent Trust Instrumentalist. Most recently, Denise was chosen winner of the Canada Council Competition for the loan of the 1824 Nicolaus Gagliano Cello donated by the McConnell family.
