John Thyhsen
Trumpet, piccolo trumpet, flugelhorn
For over 20 years Principal trumpet of the Opera Orchestra of Philadelphia, Orchestra 200l and Philly Pops, John Thyhsen is also Professor Emeritus of Rowan University, Glassboro New Jersey.

In addition to presenting over 50 recitals over the past ten years he has published three books: Trumpet Tunes, Odd Meter Tunes, and Latin Tunes. All three books are meant to encourage the player to play melodically on the trumpet and to re-establish or establish a beautiful sound.

Most recently John has completed a CD - Hot Spots - a tribute to Hoagy Carmichael Trumpet and Stings.

He has performed under the direction of many clasical conductors and has been an extra performer with the Philadelphia Orchestra over the past 20 years. Muhti, Monteaux, Hanson, Fennell, Stravinsky, Buck, Rilling, Stokowski - a small number of conductors under whom he has performed.

He has performed as a soloist with the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra 200l, Orchestra of Our Time and the Bach and Handel Chorale Orchestra, to name but a few. His repertoire covers the Baroque to the Contemporary and this includes jazz solos.

His belief in relating to the audience with an open discussion before, during and after the performance makes for an interesting and humanistic approach to a recital. Helping the audience to become more involved with the recitalist is the philosophy of John Thyhsen' s performances. The recital becomes an enjoyable, relaxing time with music and the performer.

His repertoire includes Torelli, Bitsch, Haydn, Montbrun, Peeters, Handel, Bach, Bozza, Corellli, Ibert, Fasch, Perry, Levendis, Stravinsky, etc.

Spending an hour with John Thyhsen is not only a musical experience - it is an exciting, emotional and personal experience, revealing the inner workings of a musician who has lived his life both as a performer and as an educator.
