Choral conductor Ivar Solberg studied vocal technique at the North-Norway Music Conservatoire, graduating in 1973,
followed by postgraduate study at Norway's National Conservatoire in Oslo where he gained a Cand. Musique in choral conducting.
He is currently Lecturer in Music both at University College Tromsø and at Tromsø Teacher-Training College, in Norway.
A former producer of youth and music programmes for NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation) in Troms, he has for many years been a driving force in North-Norway's culture scene; as Chairman of the Troms Music Council and of the Norwegian Music Council in Troms, as Artistic Director of the "Midnight Sun" International Choir Festival (since 1992), and as founder of many choirs and ensembles including the Canto Polare Choir, the Oslo Vocal Ensemble, the Ultima Thule Chamber Choir, and the Reale Mannfolk Male Voice Choir. Together with the Ultima Thule Chamber Choir he has won 3 first prizes in international choral competitions (Bad Ishl, Austria, 1998, Skien International Choral Festival 1999 and Verona 2000). He is also active as a politician (formerly sitting on the City Council), as Magistrate, and as a member of several panels.
