Pianist Heather O'Donnell has performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe. Her festival appearances include MaerzMusik Berlin, Festival Agora Paris, the Alternativa Festival Moscow, the Indaba Festival South Africa, the AmerKlavier Festival Chicago, the Peterhof Festival St. Petersburg, the Chopin Festival New York, and Tanglewood Music Center. She has given solo recitals in such diverse cities as Amman, Krakow, Abu Dhabi, Paris, Moscow, New York, and Berlin, and has appeared as a soloist with the St. Petersburg State Symphony, the Romanian State Philharmonic in Ploiesti, the DalSegno Chamber Orchestra, and the Harvard Orchestra.
Heather O'Donnell draws on a wide repertoire ranging from Bach's Goldberg Variations to Charles Ives's Concord Sonata and beyond. Her main focus is on music of our time and she has collaborated with many composers, leading to premières of music by Luciano Berio, Michel Philippot, Walter Zimmermann, John Harbison, and John Adams, and James Tenney. She is the dedicatee of works by Michael Finnissy, Frederic Rzewski, Oliver Schneller, George Flynn, and Sidney Corbett that she gave premiere performances of. She has worked closely with composers Helmut Lachenmann, Maurizio Kagel, and Tristan Murail. She has been featured on Deutschland Radio, Radio France, and Deutsche Welle Television and given lectures and masterclasses at Mannes College of Music (New York), DePaul University (Chicago), New England Conservatory (Boston), and Rhodes University (South Africa).
Heather O'Donnell was the first prize winner and the recipient of the Gaudeamus prize in the Fifth Krzysztof Penderecki International Competition in Kraków, Poland. Other awards include an Yvar Mikhashoff Grant, the Florence Ben-Asher Award, an Astral Career Grant from the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, and an Arts International Grant for participation in European Festivals.
Born in New York, O'Donnell entered the preparatory division of Manhattan School of Music at the age of 12 where she studied with Solomon Mikowsky and took seminars with Alfred Brendel at Carnegie Hall. She received her Bachelors degree with Highest Distinction in Performance from New England Conservatory as a student of Stephen Drury and her Masters Degree from Mannes College of Music where she studied with Peter Serkin. In addition to her musical activities, Ms. O'Donnell has taken several courses in Philosophy and Literature at the New School for Social Research and Columbia University, and was the teaching assistant of philosopher Paul Edwards at the New School.

Heather O'Donnell wurde in New York geboren, wo sie von 1985 bis 1991 an der Preparatory Division der Manhattan School of Music Klavier studierte und an den Beethoven Seminaren Alfred Brendels an der Carnegie Hall teilnahm. 1995 absolvierte sie ihren Bachelor of Piano mit besonderer Auszeichnung bei Steven Drury am New England Conservatory in Boston. Heather O'Donnell gastierte bei zahlreichen internationalen Festivals, u. A. bei Maerzmusik 2004 in Berlin, Festival Agora Paris, Tanglewood Music Festival, Taos Festival New Mexico, beim AmerKlavier Festival Chicago, Festival Alternativa Moskau, Festival ContemporaneaMente Lodi, bei der ‘Elektronischen Nacht’ des SWR in Stuttgart, beim Peterhof Festival St. Petersburg und Chopin Festival in New York. Es folgten Engagements als Konzertsolistin mit dem Staatlichen Symphonieorchester St. Petersburg, dem Harvard Orchestra in Boston, der Rumänischen Staatsphilharmonie Ploiesti und Klavierabende in Paris, Krakòw, Moscow, Amman und Abu Dhabi, sowie ein Porträtkonzert der Klaviermusik Gottried Michael Koenigs im Rahmen der ‘Magdeburger Concerte’.
In der Spielzeit 2004/05 wird sie einen Klavierabend im Apollo Saal der Staatsoper Unter den Linden geben und präsentiert ein Programm mit neuen Werken, die anlässlich des 50. Todestages von Charles Ives (2004) für sie geschrieben wurden. Dieses Programm, mit Kompositionen von Sidney Corbett, Michael Finnissy, George Flynn, Frederick Rzewski, Oliver Schneller, James Tenney und Walter Zimmermann, wird O‘Donnell auf verschiedenen Festivals in Belgien, Deutschland, England, Südafrika und den USA zur Aufführung bringen. Im Herbst 2004 erscheint eine Solo-CD bei Mode Records in New York.
Heather O'Donnell verfügt über ein breites Repertoire, das sich von Bachs Goldberg Variationen bis zur Musik der Gegenwart erstreckt. Ihr zunehmendes Interesse und Engagement für die zeitgenössische Musik dokumentiert sich in ihrer Zusammenarbeit mit Komponisten wie Tristan Murail, Jonathan Harvey, Helmut Lachenmann und Maurizio Kagel. Neben zahlreichen Uraufführungen der Werke junger Komponisten gab Heather O'Donnell die Ur- und Erstaufführungen von Arbeiten zeitgenüssischer Komponisten wie Luciano Berio, John Adams, Oliver Schneller, und John Harbison. Für ihre Arbeit erhielt sie zahlreiche Preise und Auszeichnungen, darunter den Ersten Preis beim Internationalen Penderecki Wettbewerb in Polen sowie den Gaudeamus-Interpretationspreis für zeitgenössische Musik, den Florence Ben Asher Award, ein und Stipendien des Arts International Fund for US Artists und der Yvar Mikhashoff Stiftung für Neue Musik. In Deutschland wurde ihre Arbeit bisher auf RBB, DeutschlandRadio, Deutsche Welle, SWR und BR übertragen.
Heather O‘Donnell lebt als freiberufliche Pianistin und Kammermusikerin in Berlin.
