Scott Montgomery began piano lessons at age eight and was immediately fascinated by both church and cinema organs. By age ten Scott was playing organ in various churches in his native Illinois, and from age 15 was entering competitions. In 1993 he won the Indianapolis Chapter of the American Guild of Organists’ competition and the Illinois State Music Teacher’s Association Organ Competition and soon began performing solo concerts in the area.
In 1995 Scott was appointed organist for Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church in Champaign, Illinois, a position he still holds. The following year, he began formal studies in organ at the University of Illinois on full scholarship. Continuing his ambitions of performing and competing, Scott won the 1997 AGO Region V Competition in Indiana and has since performed widely throughout the Midwest. He was featured in the “Rising Stars” concert at the 1998 National AGO Convention in Denver and won second place in the 2002 Arthur Poister National Organ Playing Competition in Syracuse, New York. Scott was the first recipient of the 2002 M. Louise Miller Scholarship sponsored by the Greater Bridgeport Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. Mr. Montgomery’s performances have been broadcast on NPR’s Pipedreams and he has also performed in Europe, studying and playing on the historic Arp Schnitger instruments in Northern Germany. Currently, Scott is currently finishing up his undergraduate degree in Organ Performance as a student of Dr. Dana Robinson. Previous organ teachers include Karen Cook, Kim Hess (U of I), Kerry Heimann (U of I) and Michael Keeley (U of I). Piano teachers have included Karen Cook, Kenneth Drake (U of I), and Samir Golescu (U of I). Scott plans to continue his studies in organ and continue his work as a church musician, teacher, and performer.
