Composer

Tim Knight was born in Northallerton in 1959 and became a chorister of York Minster under Dr Francis Jackson, subsequently studying conducting with John Coates. This excellent grounding in Choral Music together with his enthusiastic and dynamic style have led him to Choral Directing and Training work both all over the UK and also in Canada, the USA ,Holland and Norway.

He is founder-Director of the highly-acclaimed Heritage Singers. This Leeds-based Anglican chamber choir has made appearances at most of the Northern England Festivals and Cathedrals, has made recordings and in 2003 completed a first American tour to critical acclaim. He is also presently Musical Director of the Harrogate Chamber Singers, a choir of some 36 members whose concerts include a very wide range of Choral repertoire from Europe and America. In January 2005 he took over the Directorship of Thornton Vocal Union (60 strong choir based in Bradford, UK).

With a broad knowledge of mainstream repertoire and a special interest in the fields of Tudor English and 20th Century American Choral Music, Tim has become known for imaginative Concert programming both with his choirs and in his many guest workshops This year's conducting engagements include both the Northern Aldborough and Swaledale Festivals together with numerous Concerts including one in the "Choirs by Floodlight series" at Fountains Abbey.

Tim believes passionately in the future of Choral music and is also much in demand for his "survival of your choir workshops" which are currently being held around the UK covering all aspects of Choir Recruitment, Audience Building etc

With over 90 works are currently in print in the UK and USA. Tim is also an established and widely performed Composer, several pieces have won awards including the 1995 Concerto for Oboe and Strings which was highly commended in the 1995 Oare International Composers Competition. With a busy Schedule all Tim's spare time is devoted to devising games for his two young sons.

His enthusiasm for singing, both as s teacher and choir trainer is boundless, the choir have found him stimulating and challenging in his approach ….

Tim's friendly and informal manner puts everyone at their ease, his understanding of choral music and of the problems of singers is sound and we leave his sessions feeling encouraged and better informed "

Read some comments from choirs that have already benefited from the Workshops and Booklets:

"We have made more progress since June than we could have ever imagined."
"We have also been quite successful on the recruitment front having found 6 new members for the new term from the work we have done locally.
"Highworth Choral Society

"Using just one of the tips you gave attracted us 16 new members!" "Thank you very much for all of your help and ideas.
"Harrogate Chamber singers

"I thought your verbal presentation at your seminar in Paddock Wood was excellent. I'm sure that all of us would have liked to have indulged in talking about our respective choirs' problems and successes, but it was clear that you had to get a large amount of information across to us ina limited amount of time. You therefore did most of the speaking, and we remained seated and did most of the listening. Ordinarily, I might have found myself drifting off during the afternoon, especially after eating too much for lunch. And a pint or two at the pub can definitely befatal! Well, I did eat too much though I forewent the pint. But your subject, and your presentation of it, kept me very much awake throughout the seminar. No mean feat in itself"
East Malling Singers

"Many thanks for the opportunity to attend your workshop last Saturday. I found it really helpful with lots of positive things to be doing to improve our lot. It was encouraging to realise that a number of things we had already thought of were recommended, but you suggest hundreds more in your handouts and in the notes I took, so we have a great deal more we can do"
Rushmoor Oddfellows Male Voice Choir

"First of all I found your Paddock Wood seminar quite excellent. It confirmed some already budding ideas and gave us many more. It was a great day.
"Tunbridge Philharmonic

Thank you for a inspirational, helpful and enjoyable day

"We would obviously recommend your workshops to other choirs as we can already see the success from putting your ideas into practice.
"Highworth Choral Society

"I now have a 24 point action plan covering Publicity, programme ideas, audience building ideas ….. Thanks it was great"

I have just read your Handbook 'The Survival of your Choir' for the first time…….. it is obviously exhaustive in its coverage of the subject matter, and is the result of a tremendous amount of research, experience, thought and effort on your part,
