Don Hulbert
Flute, Chamber music |
|
Flutist Don Hulbert is a uniquely versatile musician whose expertise spans the length and
breadth of flute repertoire. James Oestreich in The New York Times proclaimed him “…a gifted
flutist who delights as much in versatility as in sheer virtuosity,” praised his
“…impressive artistry…” and commented that “Mr. Hulbert seemed as fully at home on
the old wooden instrument as on his modern metal one.” He made his official New York
recital debut as an Artists International Special Presentation Award Winner on January 24, 1993.
Music critic Alex Ross called the concert, at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, an “…impressive
New York recital debut…,” adding that “…Mr. Hulbert’s playing was at a high level
throughout; his closing rendition of Copland’s Duo for Flute and Piano provoked a full
standing ovation, by no means an everyday occurrence in Weill Hall.” In July 1993, he
was invited to perform in Southern France at the St. Cyprien International Festival of the Arts,
garnering praise from the press as “le virtuose de la flûte…”
Don Hulbert is an active free-lance musician and recitalist in the New York area, and has performed with groups as diverse as Friends & Enemies of New Music and Music Before 1800, and in venues as varied as Merkin Concert Hall and Performance Space 122 in New York’s East Village. He performs regularly with the American Virtuosi (an early-music ensemble) and is a founding member of the Castillo Cultural Center. Mr. Hulbert has presented a number of world première performances, including The New Math(s) by Louis Andriessen with Ensemble Sospeso at Columbia University’s Miller Theater; Martin Hennessy’s Le virus s’amuse (which was commissioned especially for Mr. Hulbert) in New York and Benjamin Fraser in Charlottesville, Virginia; (Unlikely) Aspirations for solo flute and imaginary creatures by Kirk Nurock; and Majnun Songs by Alla Borsova. This past season Don Hulbert appeared as M. Beranger in the New York Premiere of Hans Werner Henze’s one-act Opera The End of A World, with Encompass Opera, and participated in performances of music by Fred Newman (arranged by David Truskinoff) for the Castillo Theater’s production of the German playwright Heiner Müller’s Explosion of a Memory, Description of a Picture, and performed the New York Premiere of Jennifer Higdon’s Legacy for flute and piano. In addition, he presented solo recitals in Salzburg, Austria during the Salzburg Festival and in St. Louis, Missouri. Mr. Hulbert was a winner in 1982 of the New York Flute Club’s Young Artist Competition and is a recipient of the Rathaus Family Memorial Award and the Karol Rathaus Memorial Award. He can be heard on the title track of Centaur Records’ Illegal Edge: Music by José Halac. Don Hulbert is the Founder and Artistic Director of Traverse music, a chamber music ensemble that presents thought-provoking concerts incorporating wide-ranging repertoire performed on historically appropriate instruments. For the upcoming season, his chamber music ensemble, Traverse Music, will present a concert of music by Jewish composers, From Synagogue to Stage: Music by Jewish Composers, as well as a Valentine’s Day concert, Sweet Love Doth Now Invite: Music for Valentine’s Day.
