Johan Hermans was born in Hasselt (Belgium) in 1962. He studied at the famous Lemmens Institute in Louvain and at the Royal Conservatory of Liège. After graduating with master degrees in Organ and Church Music he concluded his studies with a thesis on "Rhetoric and Affects in the music of J.S. Bach" and the "Diplôme Supérieur" ("Prix d'Excellence" or DMA) in organ performance at the Royal Conservatory of Liège. Due to his outstanding achievements as a young organist he was awarded the State Medal by the Government of the French Community.

Next he was granted a scholarship several times to attend international master classes. He was taught by Jean Boyer, Michel Chapuis, and Xavier Darasse (Toulouse-France) and by Dr. Harald Vogel (Norden-Germany). He participated at the international Summer Academy for organists in Haarlem (Holland) and attended the International Flor Peeters Master Class in Mechelen. In the competition ending this course, he won the first prize. Johan also took lessons from professor Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini as an active participant at the Accademia di Musica Italiana per Organo in Pistoia, Italy.

Johan Hermans teaches Organ Performance and Chamber Music at the Conservatory of Music of Hasselt and is organist of the well-preserved and historically important Cavaillé-Coll organ at the Sacred Heart Church in the same city. He also is the artistic advisor on the series of monthly Cathedral-organ recitals which are organized by the city of Hasselt, presides a private organ concert association and is the Artistic Director of an International Organ Festival which is supported by the provincial and national authorities.

The past years he has developed into a frequently requested soloist, both in his own country and abroad. He has been invited to many music festivals in Belgium, Holland, Luxemburg, Austria, Czech, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Norway, Poland, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and has given important concerts in Basel, Bergen, Berlin, Copenhagen, Dresden, Hamburg, London, Paris (Notre Dame), Riga and Warsaw.

He has been invited several times for concert tours in the USA. He played recitals and gave lectures and master classes in major American cities such as New York, Seattle, Albuquerque, San Francisco, Houston, Atlanta and Washington D.C. In 1993 he was invited to Japan for the inaugural recital on a new organ in Itami and has been soloist in a number of concerts in the cities of Itami and Osaka. In 2000 and 2001 he was invited for concerts and master classes in Russia and Ukraine, in 2002 he was invited for a concert tour throughout Mexico.

Johan Hermans has given lectures on Flemish organ culture and organ building at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, the Madison University in Wisconsin and the University of California, the Osaka University of Arts in Japan and the Conservatories of Riga and Moscow. He has also participated in recordings for Belgian, Dutch, German, Canadian, Austrian, Latvian, Polish and American Broadcasting Corporations and has made CDs for several labels.

Johan Hermans wurde 1962 in Hasselt (Belgien) geboren. Nach dem Gymnasium (Latein und alt-Griechisch) studierte er Orgel, Kirchenmusik und Musikgeschichte am Lemmens - Institut in Leuven und an der königlichen Musikhochschule in Lüttich. Er schrieb seine Arbeit über das Thema : "Rhetorik und Affekte in der Orgelmusik J.S. Bachs" und beendete sein Studium mit das Konzertdiplom für Orgel. Johan Hermans war Teilnehmer an verschiedenen Interpretation- und Meisterkursen bei renommierten Organisten wie Jean Boyer und Xavier Darasse (Toulouse), Prof. Dr. Harald Vogel (Norden) und Ewald Kooiman (Haarlem). In 1987 wurde er als Stipendiat der flandrischen Regierung zum internationalen Meisterkurs "Die Orgelkunst Flor Peeters" entsandet und beendete diesen Kurs als Preisträger. In Italien studierte er an der "Accademia di Musica Italiana per Organo" unter der Leitung von Prof. Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini.

Johan Hermans ist Dozent am Konservatorium der Stadt Hasselt. Außerdem ist er Titular-Organist an der Heilig Herzkirche mit der historisch bedeutsamen Cavaillé-Coll Orgel (1878) und ist er Mitglied des Orgelkomitees der städtischen Kulturabteilung, das die jährlichen Orgelkonzerten in der Provinzhauptstadt organisiert.

Bedeutende internationale Konzerttätigkeiten als Solist in fast alle Länder West- und Ost-Europas, sowie in die U.S.A., Japan, Russland und Ukraine führten zu einen großen Erfolg. Johan Hermans leitete Meisterkurse und machte Gastvorlesungen an verschiedenen Universitäten und Musikhochschulen in Amerika, Japan, Mittel- und Ost-Europa.

Rundfunkaufnahmen in verschiedenen Europäischen Länder und in Nordamerika sowie seine im internationalen Fachhandel vorliegenden CD-Einspielungen (u.a. beim Verlag Motette - Ursina, Düsseldorf und bei Pavane Records Brüssel) komplettieren das künstlerisches Profil des Johan Hermans.

Johan Hermans is professioneel organist. Hij volgde hogere muziekstudies aan het Lemmensinstituut te Leuven, aan het "Conservatoire Royal de Musique" te Luik en aan de "Accademia di Musica Italiana per Organo" in Pistoia (Toscanië). Hij behaalde verschillende einddiploma's, en bekroonde zijn studies met het Diplôme Supérieur voor Orgel aan het Luikse Conservatorium.

Daarnaast ontving hij meerdere studiebeurzen om zich te perfectioneren bij bekende buitenlandse organisten. Zo ondermeer bij Prof. Xavier Darasse in Toulouse (Frankrijk), bij Prof. Dr. Harald Vogel in Noord-Duitsland en bij Prof.Tagliavini in Italië. Bovendien volgde hij verscheidene internationale meesterklassen, o.m. het Séminaire d'Orgue de Wallonie (J. Boyer, J. Ferrard en B. Foccroulle), de Internationale Zomeracademie in Haarlem en de Accademia Internacional de Organo Iberico in Spanje (F.Chapelet en J. Ferrard). In eigen land ontving hij tweemaal een beurs voor de Meesterklas Fl. Peeters te Mechelen.

Johan Hermans is leraar orgel aan o.m. het Stedelijk Muziekconservatorium te Hasselt. In diezelfde stad is hij titularis-organist van het Cavaillé-Coll-orgel in de Heilig Hartkerk (Provinciaal Heiligdom) en was hij organist voor de Pontificale hoogmissen in de kathedraal van 1990 tot 1998.

In enkele jaren tijds wist hij zich een concertpraktijk op te bouwen als solist in binnen- en buitenland. Zo werd hij uitgenodigd op muziekfestivals in de hele Benelux, in Denemarken, Duitsland, Engeland, Frankrijk, Italië, Letland, Noorwegen, Oostenrijk, Polen, Spanje, Tsjechië, Zweden en Zwitserland.

Maar ook buiten het Europese continent ondernam Johan verscheidene opgemerkte tournees. Zo werd hij reeds meerdere keren uitgenodigd voor concertreizen in de U.S.A., waarbij hij concerteerde als solist in kathedralen en concertzalen in meerdere grote steden zoals Atlanta, New York City, Houston, Seattle, Albuquerque, San Francisco, en Washington D.C. Bovendien gaf hij er lezingen en Masterclasses aan diverse universiteiten zoals de University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, de University of Madison en de University of California. Dit alles mede onder de auspiciën van het Vlaamse Cultuurministerie.

In 1993 maakte hij zijn eerste concertreis naar Japan. Hij stond er in voor de inspeling van een nieuw orgel in de stad Itami, en gaf tal van concerten in en rond de grootstad Osaka, ook hier weer gecombineerd met een lezing over de Vlaamse orgelkunst en -bouw aan de Osaka University of Arts.

De jongste jaren breidde zijn concertpraktijk zich uit naar Midden- en Oost-Europa, met kathedraalconcerten in o.a. Warschau en Riga, masterclasses aan het Conservatorium van Moskou en een gast-optreden in het Internationaal Bach-festival in Dnepropetrovsk (Oekraïne).

Johan Hermans maakte opnames voor radio- en televisiezenders in België, Nederland, Canada, Polen, Duitsland, de USA, Spanje, en Letland en werkte mee aan de totstandkoming van diverse CD's. Zijn repertoire reikt van de Robertsbridge Codex (14de eeuw) over Bach en de Franse Romantici tot de hedendaagse muziek. Daarbij gaat zijn muzikale voorkeur uit naar enerzijds J.S. Bach (met jaarlijks uitnodigingen op gespecialiseerde festivals in New York, Berlijn, Oost-Duitsland, ...), en anderzijds naar het Franse Romantisch - Symfonische repertoire (van Franck en Guilmant tot Langlais en Messiaen).

Hoewel zijn hoofdactiviteit duidelijk ligt in het solowerk, verdiept Johan zich daarnaast ook in het orgel als ensemble-instrument. Zo treedt hij regelmatig op in de combinaties orgel + trombone en orgel+saxofoon, maar ook orgel + marimba. Voorts werkt hij vaak samen met diverse kamerorkesten en -ensembles.

Als pleitbezorger van de hedendaagse orgelmuziek tenslotte bracht Johan Hermans wereldcreaties van zowel Vlaamse als Waalse, Duitse en Amerikaanse werken, waarvan er verscheidene speciaal voor hem gecomponeerd

Besides his technical mastery Hermans possesses an artistic quality which lifts his music over the borders of virtuosity into the realm of true music. His Bach-interpretation proofed to be of a direct clarity and a musical quality that will stick in the minds of the listeners for a long time - probably even the best interpretation ever in the North. His Franck-interpretation was a true triumph of registration art and dramatic expression.
