Maria Freeman
is known for her beautiful and sensitive interpretations of french song. Her recital literture includes the song cycles La Bonne Chanson, Ariettes Oubliees, and La Courte Paille. Her best songs are are the songs of Gabriel Faure and Claude Debussy. She is also known to master the interpretation of the German lied. Miss Freeman completed her Masters of Music at the Manhattan School of Music where she studied voice with Charles Bressler and opera with Lou Galterio. She coached with Gary Wedow, June Murano-Murray, Nico Castel, and Dennis Helmrich.
She received her undergraduate degree from New England Conservatory of Music, where she studied voice with Geraldine Martin. She was soprano soloist and recording artist with the Conservatory Chorus, Chamber Singers, and Tour Chorus. Her solo in Monteverdi's Magnificat with chorus and orchestra in Jordan Hall was featured in a spread in Raytheon Magazine. She sang in the annual masterclasses of Eleanor Steber, Gerald Souzay, and Hans Hotter and received an Ethan Ayer patron scholarship. She received a fellowship to the Blossom Music Festival and coached extensively with Martin Katz and Stephen Lord. She received an Alpha Sigma Iota scholarship to Tanglewood's Phyllis Curtain Seminar where she coached with Phyllis Curtain, Margo Garrett, Dennis Helmrich, Phillip Highfill, and Terri Decima. Born in Virginia, Maria Freeman is a graduate of Duke Ellington High School of the Arts in Washington, DC. She was a soloist with the Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, and a member of the DC Youth Chorale, and Duke Ellington Opera Workshop. During school breaks, she sang in productions with Workshops for Careers in the Arts at Howard University. Miss Freeman resides in New York City.
