Gabriel Faur

Gabriel Faur The Cellist Gabriel Faur was born in 1981 in Bucharest, Romania, to a family of musicians, with which he moved in 1987 to Israel.

At the age of eight he got his first cello lesson from his father, Cornelius Faur, a cellist of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. Just two years later, at the age of ten, he played in his first solo public appearance pieces of considerable difficulty such as Popper’s “Elfentanz” and some Paganini caprices- originally written for the violin.

Later he studied 2 years with Michael Khomitser in Tel-Aviv and after moving to Austria in 1997 with Valentin Erben in Vienna.

Since 1998 he has studied in the class of Adalbert Skocic at the Conservatory of music in Vienna where he graduated in February 2003 with “Summa cum Laude”.

In 2002 he entered the chamber music class of the well-known "Altenberg-trio".

During the year 2000 he was invited to study with Radu Aldulescu at the "International Menuhin Music Academy-Gstaad“-Switzerland. There he also became a member of the "Camerata Lysy“, with which he played many concerts in Switzerland, Canada, Spain and Argentina under Alberto Lysy ,accompanied by this ensemble he also often played as a soloist in Switzerland, among others at the Victoria-Hall in Geneva.

Gabriel Faur had the privilege to meet and to study in masterclasses or private with such great musicians as J. Starker, A.Parisot, R.Aaron, W.Laufer, A.Lysy, H.Schiff, Y.Hanani, I.Ionescu, F.Helmerson, T.Zimmermann, H.Shaham, C.Mandeal, R.Weinsheimer, D.Geringas, G.Teutsch, A.Niculescu, P.Roczek, J.Smirnov, E.Finke G.Baich, D.Lutz, C.Hagen, A Arenkow, W.Schulz, B.Kuschnir, M.Maisky, B.Greenhouse and M.Rostropovich. During the last years through intensive musical cooperation he established very close ties and is constantly in contact with Radu Aldulescu and Martin Hornstein.

Gabriel Faur is a Prize winner not only of many national competitions in Israel, like the “Julius Burger” America-Israel Cultural Foundation prize, but also of many International Cello Competitions such as:

  • 1st Prize “Citta di Stresa“-Italy
  • 1st Prize “David Popper“- Hungary
  • 1st Prize “Johannes Brahms“- Austria
  • 2nd Prize at the first edition 2003 "Arturo Bonucci" Cello competition - Italy
  • 2nd Prize “Gaspar Cassado“-Spain
  • 2nd Prize “Classica-Nova-Shostakovitch”-Germany
  • 3rd Prize “Liezen“- Austria
  • 3rd Prize “Jeunesses Musicales“-Romania

Gabriel Faur perfected his orchestral experience working and playing as a member of the “Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra“ and the “GMJO” (Gustav Mahler Jugend Orchester) under such great conductors as K.Masur, Y.Temirkanov, L.Schifrin, N.Marriner, Y.Kreizberg, C.Mueller and Franz Welser-Möst. During the season 2002/03 he was a member of the Radio Symphony Orchestra, “RSO” - Vienna.

He frequently and passionately plays chamber music in different ensembles and in 2002 he also founded the “Fidelio Quartet”.

He constantly gives public performances as soloist, recitalist and chamber musician in Austria, Italy, Israel, Romania, U.S.A, Switzerland, Slovakia, Germany and Spain.

Recently he played the Dvorak Concerto accompanied by the „Oltenia Philharmonic Orchestra“ under Modest Cichirdan - and together with the violonist Lidia Baich the J.Brahms double concerto with the conservatory symphony orchestra of Vienna conducted by Georg Mark at the Cultur Center Eisenstadt and in the Golden-Hall of the "Musikverein" in Vienna. He played these concerts on a Guarnerius Cello, that was kindly put to his disposal by “Machold”, Vienna.

He plays rather like a violinist, very light and without effort, beautiful sound combined with powerful technique.

He plays on a cello made in Milano, Italy from c.1780. The cello is on loan through the Orpheon Foundation. last year
