Stephen Mark Barchan was born in Middlesbrough, 1982. He is currently a student at the University of Huddersfield, studying with Richard Steinitz. His music has been played throughout Europe and the USA.
He is the composer-in-residence and conductor of the Catalyst Ensemble. He was a winner in the 4th Andrej Panufnik International Young Composers Competition. Later this year, his piece 'To Sleep', a setting of 'Sonnet To Sleep' by John Keats, will be performed at the Third International Festival Of Composition 'Alfeo Gigli' in Italy. He has had a series of premieres and world premieres given in concert at the University of Huddersfield and the Royal College of Music. He has been awarded the British scholarship to attend the Ostrava Days 2003, where he will talk about his music and workshop various new pieces. His music is heavily influenced by Stravinksy, Mark-Anthony Turnage and jazz music. He has a strong interest in poetry and paintings, and he often uses them as the inspiration behind many of his pieces.
