Jonathan Babcock

Jonathan Babcock is rapidly establishing himself as a respected conductor and educator in New York City, having worked with choral organizations of every type, from elementary school to university, as well as community and church choirs, ranging in styles from jazz to oratorio.
Dr. Babcock is proud to be in his fourth season as Artistic Director of the Gay Gotham Chorus, the 40 voice Men's Chorus in Residence at the Church of St. Paul & St. Andrew in New York City, with whom he has appeared at venues throughout New York including Merkin Concert Hall, Symphony Space, and the Church of St. Mary the Virgin. Highlights of his tenure with the Gay Gotham Chorus include performances of the Brahms Alto Rhapsody with internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe and the Cosmopolitan Symphony Orchestra, a concert of cabaret music with Broadway star Victoria Clark, and performances of Ned Rorem's Love Alone, Francis Poulenc's Laudes de Saint Antoine de Padoue, Benjamin Britten's The Ballad of Little Musgrave and Lady Barnard, Samuel Barber's A Stopwatch and an ordnance Map and John Taverner's Magnificat. In May of 2003 Jonathan's article "Voices Carry" was featured in the Music Issue of The Advocate discussing the importance of choral music to the gay community as well as the mission of the Gay Gotham Chorus. An active proponent of contemporary music, Dr. Babcock has been instrumental in the commissioning of new works for the Gay Gotham Chorus. In past seasons, he has conducted the world premieres of Stefan Weisman's David and Jonathan for chorus and orchestra, Jerry Ulrich's Journey of the Magi, and Mark Miller's Rejoice in Jerusalem. Upcoming world premieres include works by Amnon Wolman, Marvin Gaspard, Paul Moravec and Stephen Paulus. Mr. Babcock's past conducting engagements include the Hartt School of Music Chamber Singers, the Hartt Chorale, The Hartwick College Summer Music Festival and Institute, the Fredonia Summer Choral Music Program, as well as regional festivals throughout the northeastern United States. An accomplished vocalist, Dr. Babcock has performed as soloist with numerous choruses and chamber groups in a wide range of repertoire including the Duruflé Requiem, Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass, Orff's Carmina Burana, and the Mozart Requiem. Dr. Babcock is currently a member of both the New York Virtuoso Singers and The Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church Sanctuary Choir. He has sung under the baton of noted conductors including Robert Spano, Robert Bass, Leon Botstein, Harold Rosenbaum, and Richard Westenburg. Dr. Babcock was appointed to the faculty of the Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn College in August of 2001. There he serves as the conductor of the Brooklyn College Chorale and Conservatory Women's Choir. Recent performances with the Chorale include the Brooklyn Conservatory's first performance of Handel's oratorio Alexander's Feast as well as Carissimi's Historia di Jepthe and Pergolesi's Stabat Mater. In addition to conducting, he teaches classes in Music Education and provides individual voice instruction. Jonathan received the Doctorate in Musical Arts degree in Choral Conducting in May 2003 from The Hartt School, University of Hartford, and received Masters and Bachelors Degrees in Music Education from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam.
