Isaac Stern

Violin

Until his death in September 2001, ISAAC STERN was, without question, one of the foremost violinists of the century. Yet the image he evokes is much larger than that of an out-and-out virtuoso. An influential cultural force, he spearheaded the drive to save Carnegie Hall from demolition; he was Chairman of the America-Israel Cultural Foundation; and his groundbreaking visit to China in 1980 resulted in the Academy Award winning film "From Mao to Mozart - Isaac Stern in China".

A champion of contemporary music, premiering works by Dutilleux and Maxwell Davies, he maintained to the last an energetic schedule amongst celebrated orchestras and colleagues around the world. To honour his remarkable recording career as an exclusive artist with CBS/Sony, Stern was made their first "Artist Laureate".

He has also been awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society and the Presidential Medal of Freedom - the highest civilian honour in the USA.

"No violinist of our time has had a wider influence than Isaac Stern." The Guardian
