In the 1997/98 season Christopher Robertson sang the title role in Verdi's Rigoletto for the first time in his career at the San Francisco Opera in December of 1997. He also appeared at the New York City Opera as Germont in La Traviata, with the Houston Opera in Madama Butterfly and Billy Budd, and in the title role in Rossini's Guillaume Tell in performances for the Washington Concert Opera. In the autumn of 1998 he will make his debut at the Teatro Comunale in Florence as Ford in a new production of Falstaff under Antonio Pappano and will return to the Metropolitan Opera in Werther. Future engagements also include I Vespri Siciliani in the new production with the San Francisco Opera.
In the 1996/97 season he made his debut at the English National Opera as Germont in La Traviata in a new production staged by Jonathan Miller. He also sang this role for his debut with the Washington Opera. He made his San Francisco opera debut as Amonasro in Aida and appeared with the Miami Opera for his first Di Luna in Trovatore. He sang his first performances of Renato in Un Ballo in Maschera for the Flemish Opera and his first Kurvenal in Act III of Tristan und Isolde under James Conlon at the Aspen Festival.
Future plans include Lucia di Lammermoor, a new production of I Vespri Siciliani in San Francisco and Tristan und Isolde at the Houston Grand Opera.
