David Pyatt

Horn

In 1988, at the age of 14, DAVID PYATT became the youngest winner of the prestigious BBC Young Musician of the Year competition.  Following this success he has embarked on a solo career which has taken him throughout the United Kingdom, as well as to Europe, North America, Canada and Japan. In the UK he has worked with many leading orchestras, including the English Chamber Orchestra, London Mozart Players and the Hallé. He made his BBC Promenade debut in 1993 performing Strauss' Second Horn Concerto. In 1996 Gramophone Magazine announced David Pyatt as their Young Artist of the Year for his solo début recording of Strauss Concertos.  From the beginning of the 1998/9 season he took up the position of Principal Horn of the London Symphony Orchestra.

In 1996 David Pyatt signed an exclusive contract with Erato Disques.  His first disc for Erato featuring the Mozart Concertos with Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields was nominated as Gramophone Magazine's Recording of the Month in July 1997 and a second disc of horn and piano works with Martin Jones was released in Spring 1998.  His two earlier recordings for EMI, featuring the Strauss Concertos and the Britten Serenade with the Britten Sinfonia and Nicholas Cleobury, have both met with tremendous critical acclaim.  "Sensationally good horn playing....it is musically so aware, so richly imagined" (Gramophone).  Soon to be released is a recording of Schubert's Auf dem Ström with Michael Schade and Graham Johnson on Hyperion.

David Pyatt's engagements in the 1998/9 season include important debuts at the Salzburg Festival with the Camerata Academica under Roger Norrington and with the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin.  He will also perform Oliver Knussen's Horn Concerto under the baton of the composer with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the BBC Proms and on tour in Germany.  In London he appears twice at the Queen Elizabeth Hall with the Britten Sinfonia and Nicholas Cleobury and with the Chilingirian Quartet in a performance of the Mozart Quintet as part of the International Chamber Music Festival.

At the age of 17 David Pyatt toured the former East Germany performing as soloist with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales under Tadaaki Otaka.  He then undertook a further tour with them to Japan.  In the USA he has performed at the International Horn Society Symposium in Florida and at the renowned Vancouver Chamber Music Festival.   Last season David Pyatt made a hugely successful USA concerto debut with the Columbus Symphony. Other overseas engagements have included the Britten Serenade at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam and concerts with the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra and Trevor Pinnock, the Norrkoping Symphony Orchestra and Daniel Harding, Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra and Lisbon's Gulbenkian Orchestra.

In addition to many concerto performances, David Pyatt regularly performs recital and chamber music. In 1996 he took part in the prestigious Carte blanche aux vents series at the Louvre in Paris with colleagues including Maurice Bourgue, Christian Tetzlaff and Emmanuel Pahud.  Other recent appearances include two concerts at the Wigmore Hall, one with the Endellion Quartet and another in trio with Anthony Marwood and Martin Jones, as well as recitals with Peter Donohoe at the Jersey International Festival and with Martin Jones for BBC Manchester and the North Wales Music Festival.

David Pyatt has broadcast for both the BBC and Independent television and radio.   As a past BBC Young Musician of the Year he played a major part in their 10th anniversary celebrations in 1996, recording a CD for the BBC Music Magazine and making several television appearances including a recital with Martin Jones and the Young Composer Workshop.

David Pyatt is a former Principal Horn of both the National Youth Orchestra and the National Youth Chamber Orchestra of Great Britain.   He started playing when he was eight, and was taught for four years by Julie Lord before continuing his studies with Frank Lloyd.   His recital, concerto and chamber repertoire is extensive, ranging from the works of Telemann, Haydn and Mozart to those of leading contemporary composers.
