BARBARA FRITTOLI Born in Milan, BARBARA FRITTOLI studied at the conservatory Giuseppe Verdi, graduating with the highest honours, having studied with Giovanna Canetti and winning several competitions. Since her opera debut in Bucchi's IL GIUOCO DEL BARONE at the Teatro Comunale, Florence in 1989, Ms Frittoli's career has reached international acclaim and she is now recognised as the leading Italian lirico-spinto soprano of her generation. She has worked with many leading conductors including Claudio Abbado, Semyon Bychkhov, Sir Andrew Davis, Sir Colin Davis, Daniele Gatti, Lorin Maazel, Sir Charles Mackerras, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Antonio Pappano and Georges Prêtre.

Her operatic roles include LA BOHEME's Mimi and Micaëla at the Teatro San Carlo, Naples, Vienna's Staatsoper, Teatro Communale in Florence and at the Metropolitan Opera, New York; CARMEN's Micaela in Philadelphia, Vienna, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and the Met; the Countess (LE NOZZE DI FIGARO) in Ferrara, Vienna, La Scala, Milan, and the Salzburg Festival; Desdemone (OTELLO) in Brussels, the Salzburg Festival and the Teatro Regio in Turin. She has also appeared as Fiordiligi (COSI FAN TUTTE) in Vienna, at the Ravenna Festival, in Covent Garden, Naples and the Glyndebourne Festival; Donna Elvira (DON GIOVANNI) in Vienna, the Bastille Opera in Paris and Naples; Liù (TURANDOT) at the Bastille and on tour in China with the Maggio Musicale of Florence; Alice (FALSTAFF) at the Accademia Santa Cecilia and the Teatro Comunale of Florence; Amelia (SIMON BOCCANEGRA) at the Teatro Comunale of Bologna.

Barbara Frittoli has also appeared in numerous concert performances including Verdi's REQUIEM with Claudio Abbado and Riccardo Muti, Brahms's GERMAN REQUIEM with Antonio Pappano, Pergolesi's STABAT MATER with Muti, Rossini's STABAT MATER with Riccardo Chailly.

Her recordings include LE TRIPTYQUE (for Decca), IL BARBIERE (Teldec), IL VIAGGIO A REIMS (Sony), Pergolesi's STABAT MATER (EMI), Rossini's STABAT MATER (for Decca) and Liu (TURANDOT) conducted by Zubin Mehta for RCA/BMG. Her first solo recording, a recital of Mozart Arias conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras that has just been released. A recording of Verdi Arias conducted by Sir Colin Davis will soon be issued by ERATO records.

Other engagements have included she sang Donna Elvira in DON GIOVANNI for the Bastille and at the Salzburg Festival, Alice in FALSTAFF for the re-opening of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London conducted by Haitink, Sifare in MITRIDATE RE DI PONTO at the Chatelet, Paris, COSI FAN TUTTE at the Opera de Bastille with Mackerras, Marguerite FAUST with Jurowski in Genoa and Donna Anna (DON GIOVANNI) for Glyndebourne with Sir Andrew Davis.

Recently she has sung OTELLO in Munich with Mehta, Leonora in IL TROVATORE and Alice in FALSTAFF with Muti at La Scala as part of the Verdi Celebrations and Elettra in IDOMENEO at the Edinburgh Festival. Fiordiligi COSI at La Scala and at the Vienna State Opera with Muti, Vitellia in LA CLEMENZA DI TITO with Sir Colin Davis at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, LUISA MILLER with Levine and OTELLO with Gergiev at the Metropolitan Opera, New York. She will also sing the title role in LUISA MILLER at Covent Garden and OTELLO at the Bastille and the Vienna State Opera.
