In recent seasons he has appeared with the five London orchestras, regional UK orchestras including the CBSO, RPO, SCO and RSNO; and across Europe with the Berlin Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestras, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, Dresden Philharmonic, Swedish Radio, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Czech Philharmonic and Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. He has performed annually at the BBC Proms since 1979, and at major Festivals including six consecutive visits to the Edinburgh Festival, a visit to the renowned French piano Festival at La Roque D'Antheron, and in Germany at the Festival of the Ruhr and the Schleswig Holstein Music Festival which he re-visited this Summer.
Peter Donohoe also performs regularly in Australia, New Zealand and the Far East. In the United States he has appeared with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Dallas and Detroit Symphony Orchestras and the Cleveland Orchestra. Return visits to the US this year include concerts with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and Chicago Symphony Orchestra to perform the Lutoslawski Concerto.
Peter Donohoe has made many fine recordings on EMI Records and has won awards for his recording of the Liszt Sonata in B Minor (the Grand Prix International du Disque Liszt) and for the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No 2 (the Gramophone Concerto award). Peter joined forces with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Sir Simon Rattle for the three Bartok Piano Concerti, about which Michael Kennedy in the Gramophone Magazine wrote "...this is a marvellous trio of performances and serves as a fresh reminder of just how great these works are". Recent releases include Beethoven Diabelli Variations and Sonata Opus 101, and the complete Rachmaninov Preludes. His first recording for Chandos Records, of the complete repertoire by Messiaen for piano and wind instruments, with the Netherlands Wind Ensemble conducted by Reinbert de Leeuw has received widespread acclaim His recent recording for Hyperion of Litolff's Concerti Symphoniques Numbers 2 and 4 has become a best-seller as has the Naxos recording with the Elgar String Quartet of Elgar Piano Quintet in A minor.
Peter Donohoe maintains a strong artistic link with the area in which he lives. His close association with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra dates back to 1974, and he was artistic director of the Solihull Festival during the period 1991-95. He is vice-president of the Birmingham Conservatoire and has been awarded Honorary Doctorates of Music from the University of Birmingham in 1992, the University of Central England in 1994, and the University of Warwick in 1996.
