Paul Loeb van Zuilenburg
was born in Pretoria on May10,1966.
His family moved to Stellenbosch in 1970 where he matriculated at the Paul Roos-Gymnasium, obtaining an A-average with distinctions in Science, English, History and Music (Trumpet). His other subjects were Afrikaans, Mathematics and German.
In 1986 he obtained the BA(Music) degree Cum Laude at the University of Stellenbosch with main subjects Music and History. Then followed two years overseas study at the Rotterdam Conservatoire (Holland) where he was granted the Performers Diploma (UM-Uitvoerend Musicus) at the end of 1988.
At the Stellenbosch Conservatoire he received tuition from Reinier Strydom, Joyce Davis and Roy Lilley. (1984-1986). The well known Belgian trumpet virtuoso Theo Mertens was his tutor in Rotterdam . He had the opportunity to attend master classes at Toulon (France), Utrecht (Holland) and Paris (France) and was personally coached by such international celebrities as Maurice André, Adolph Herseth, Edward Tarr and Timofy Dokschitzer. Paul Loeb van Zuilenburg holds Licentiates of the Royal Schools of Music of London London (LRSM-Performers) and UNISA (UPLM-Performers) obtained with Honours. In 1994 he received his B.Mus (Hons.) degree in Music Science from the University of South Africa Cum Laude. He obtained his Masters Degree from the University of Stellenbosch in 1996. The D Mus degree of the University of South Africa was awarded to him at the end of 1999. His research focused on Compositions for Brass Ensemble of South African Composers (Masters Thesis) and the Compositions of Klaas van Oostveen, well-known South African/Dutch composer/theoretician/educator (Doctoral Dissertation). Paul Loeb van Zuilenburg has been a regular performer on SABC radio and has performed as soloist with all the leading orchestras in South Africa. After playing in the NPO for seven years he took up the position of Head of Brass at Hilton College in 1997 and will be taking over as Director of Music from 1 January 2002. He has also performed as soloist with Kobus du Plooy in Organ and Trumpet recitals at all the South African major Art Festivals.
