Luca Belcastro
was born in Como, Italy (September 18, 1964). He graduated in Classical guitar at the Conservatory of Music "Giuseppe Verdi" in Milano and in Composition, with the highest grade, at the Conservatory of Music "Giuseppe Nicolini" in Piacenza. He studied with Giuseppe Colardo, Sonia Bo and Azio Corghi, with whom he attended specialization courses at the Accademia Goffredo Petrassi in Parma and at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Roma, where he graduated with top marks and "Premio SIAE".
In 1996 he was awarded first prize at the International Composer Competition "Valentino Bucchi" in Roma with a work for soprano and symphony orchestra. In 1997 he received second prize at the International Competition "2 agosto" in Bologna with a work for violin, piano and orchestra, which has been performed in Piazza Maggiore in Bologna and has been broadcast by RADIORAI and RAI-TV. In 1998 he was awarded the "Troisième Grand Prix" at the"Concours Européen du Jeune Compositeur", organized by Unione Europea and the Orchestre Philarmonique de Strasbourg; the same orchestra will perform the composition in Strasbourg. In the same year he was given awards at several international competitions: "New Music for Sligo" (Irlanda), "Città di Udine", "Città di Barletta" e "Città di Pavia" (II pr.) and Lucus - Potenza (III pr.). In 1999 he received awards at the international competitions "ICONS" in Torino, "Ciutat d'Alcoi" (Spain), "Sommerliche Musiktage Hitzacker" (Germany) and "Poesie in Musica" in Cesenatico (FO). He was selected for the "ISCM-World Music Days" - Roumania 1999; "MusicaNova" and "ppIANISSIMO" - Sofia (Bulgaria) 2000. He was also finalist at the "Deuxième Journées de la Jeune Musique" Marseille (France) 1998 and "Franco Evangelisti" - Roma 1999, 2000 and 2001. In 2001 a composition of his for vocal quartet won the International Competition "Biennale Neue Musik Hannover" and was performed by The Hilliard Ensemble. He won the International Competition "ICOMS" in Torino and he was awarded at the "Dimitris Mitroupoulos - World Opera Project" in Athens with the Opera "1896 - Pheidippides Š corri ancora!". Some of his works have been praised in international and national composition competitions ("May in Miami", Florida International University; "June in Buffalo", State University of New York - USA 1993; "VII Biennale dei Giovani artisti dell'Europa mediterranea" - Lisbona 1994; "Gino Contilli" - Messina 1995; "Settimane Incontri - Di Nuovo Musica" - Reggio Emilia 1997; "IBLA Grand Prize" - New York 1998; "Ladislav Kubik" - Florida 1998; "Angelo-Comneno" - Roma 1998; "Ennio Porrino" - Cagliari 1999). His compositions have been performed during festivals in Italy (Nuova Consonanza - Roma, Settembre Musica e Rive-Gauche Concerti - Torino, Di Nuovo Musica - Reggio Emilia, Traiettorie Sonore - Como, Venezia Musica Nuova, Vocemusica - Faenza, Interensemble - Padova, Contemporanea-mente - Lodi, Contemporanea '98 - Udine, Musica in Irpinia - Avellino, etc.) and abroad (USA, Portugal, Spain, Ireland, England, Germany, Roumania, France, Bulgaria, Greece, Finland).
