Trio Amabile
Founded in 1993, Trio Amabile has established a reputation for their artistry, passion and chemistry. Members Alfred and Colette Abel and Margot Marlatt have crafted their considerable musical abilities into memorable concerts for audiences in Indiana and throughout the midwest.
The players:
- Concertmaster of the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra since 1986, Alfred Abel has performed frequently as soloist with this and other orchestras. After completing two undergraduate degrees with honors (in Classics and in Violin Performance with Vartan Manoogian), Mr. Abel pursued graduate studies with Franco Gulli, at Indiana University. He and his wife, Colette, played in the St. Alban Quartet and toured Spain, Germany and Italy, delighting audiences and critics alike. Working in the Trio Amabile provides expression of their mutual passion for chamber music.
- Violist Colette Abel brings her considerable orchestral and chamber music experience to the unique chemistry of Trio Amabile. Ms. Abel has toured throughout Spain, Italy and Germany with the St. Alban Quartet and has appeared as a soloist with the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra, the Indiana University Philharmonia, and the Butler University Symphony. Ms. Abel received her undergraduate degree from the prestigious Eastman School of Music. Colette is currently a Doctoral candidate at Indiana University, where she also received her Master’s Degree.
- Cellist Margot Marlatt began her professional career in New York City where she toured with New York City Opera National Company and served as principal cellist of the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, Queens Philharmonic and the Bronx Symphony Orchestra. Margot has appeared as soloist with the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra, the Purdue University Symphony, the North Jersey Philharmonic and the Bronx Symphony Orchestra. In addition to Trio Amabile, Ms. Marlatt currently teaches cello at both Purdue University and Wabash College, and is principal cellist of the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra. She received her Bachelor's Degree from University of Toronto and her Master's Degree from Butler University.
Reviews of recent performances by Trio Amabile's members
- "Among the many highlights was the solo appearance of [Lafayette Symphony Orchestra] principal cellist, Margot Marlatt. If music could be rated by a calorie count, then Lalo’s Concerto in D Minor for Cello and Orchestra would rate right up there with a full New York cheesecake or a five-pound chocolate mousse."
"Rich, full tone and dazzling technique were the benchmarks of Marlatt’s performance. Her sensitivity in the beautiful Intermezzo was laudable."
- -Dick Jaeger, Lafayette Journal and Courier
- The critics were equally effusive following the Abel's recent performance of Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola.
- "Alfred and Colette Abel showed their mastery in a passionate and remarkable rendering of the Sinfonia Concertante in E Flat for Violin and Viola. Drawing on a deep well of fervency, husband and wife displayed their virtuosity in a manner of which Wolfgang most certainly would have approved."
- -Dick Jaeger, Lafayette Journal and Courier
- "Mr. Abel’s violin immediately began transmitting his sheer joy of performing, a quality he consistently demonstrated throughout each movement...The couple proceeded to the Andante where both played with heartfelt warmth and emotion...Wrapping up with a Presto, the two performers aggressively attacked the movement, matching each other note for note, string for string."
- -Randy L Mayes, Lafayette Community Leader
