BREAKTHROUGH AND YEARS OF ESTABLISHMENT. NEOROMANTIC PERIOD
The performance of the chamber work The Garden (Text: 'Abdu'l-Bahá), at the inauguration of the chamber music room of Oslo Concert Hall, in 1976, represented Thoresen's breakthrough as a composer, according to the music critic Harald Herresthal. The piece obtained a 4th prize at the EBU Rostrum in Paris. Member and chairman of the board of the Norwegian Studio for Electronic Music from 1977 till the closing of the studio five years later. Member of the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá'ís of Norway, 1976-79 as a secretary, 1981-87 as chairman/deputy of the assembly. Teacher of electroacoustic music and sonology at the Norwegian State Academy of Music, 1976-1981. The flute piece With an Open Hand or a Clenched Fist and Marm premiered at the Nordlyd Festival in Oslo 1976. Thoresen arranges seminar and lectures with Dr. Werner Kaegi at the festival. The multi-media work Skapelser ("Creations") commissioned for and premiered at the 10th anniversary of the Høvikodden Arts Centre in 1979. The same piece transferred to a TV ballet the same year. In 1978 Thoresen arranges a seminar with Pierre Schaeffer in Oslo.
During the years 1978-1981 Thoresen works on a scientific sonology project, with a grant from the Norwegian Council for Science and the Humanities, to work out a strategy for auditive analysis. Produces the textbooks Hastighetstyper (Categories of Velocity), Feltdannelse (Time Fields), Tidsretninger (Time Directions), Musikk som tegn og struktur (Music as Sign and Structure), An Auditive Analysis of Schubert's Piano Sonata ... as a part of the documentation of the project. These have been the backbone of the sonology education at the Norwegian State Academy.
Moves to Saksumdal outside Lillehammer, 1979. Composes the piano piece Stages of the Inner Dialogue (1980), which was awarded the prize "Work of the Year" from the Norwegian Society of Composers the following year. In 1980-1981 Thoresen made two lecture tours to present the sonology theory to York, Nottingham, London, Utrecht, Ghent and Paris. Chairman of the jury of the Nordic Music Days in Oslo, 1981. The piano trio Bird of the Heart premiered at the Bergen International Festival 1982 by Oslo Trio. The same year Rettferdighetens sol (The Sun of Justice) was commissioned and premiered by Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, preparatory work for the Symphonic Concerto for Violin and Orchestra was made at the Sweelinck electronic studio in Amsterdam and the sonology theory was presented during the Nordic Music Days in Oslo.
In 1983 Thoresen works on sonology textbooks; Layers and their functions, Aural Design and Compositional Technique. He composes Solspill (Sun Play), piano music inspired by folk music and nature (premiered at the Finn Alnæs exhibition at the Høvikodden Arts Centre in 1985).
In 1983 during the Nordic Music Days, he leads a seminar on auditive analysis with presentation of Layers and Contextual Meanings in Thorkell Sigurdbjørnsons's Eurydice.
In 1984 he works on Symphonic Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, and has his own concert and presentation in Radio France as well as one week of lectures at the Conservatoire Supérieure de la Musique, Paris, in the Schaffer/Reibel class of electroacoustic music. The same year he presents the sonology theory at the second international symposium of musical semiotics in Jyväskylä, Finland, and lectures at the Music Academy in Hamburg.
MICROTONAL AND SPECTROMORPHOLOGICAL PERIOD
In 1984 Thoresen got in touch with the spectral music in Paris through Tristan Murail, an event which had an important impact on his composing work. In 1985 the Symphonic Concerto for Violin and Orchestra was premiered by Stig Nilsson and Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen and transmitted at the EBU. The piece was also presented at the EBU Rostrum in Paris. The same year Thoresen became lecturer at the State Academy of Music in Malmö, Sweden, and the first microtonal work, Les trois régénérations, inspired by Norwegian folk music and French spectral music, commissioned by France Musique (Radio France) was premiered in Paris.
In 1986 Illuminations : Concerto for Two Violoncelli and Orchestra was composed, the composer's first piece using the organisational principle of the spectral music by building the orchestral sound with pitches obtained by ring-modulation of harmonics. The solo parts, on the other hand, use principles from Norwegian folk music. Symphonic Concerto for Violin and Orchestra nominated for the Nordic Council Music Prize. The cantata Banners of Piece, commissioned by the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá'ís of Norway, composed and premiered. Lecturer at the Swedish Musical Spring in Malmö. In the period 1986-1988 Thoresen was member of the committee for the Norwegian State purchase scheeme for phonograms. In the spring of 1987 Quadrat for three Dx7 synthesizers and three percussionists was premiered. The work was commissioned by the Norwegian Broadcasting Co. for a Nordic EBU concert. The work was awarded the Norwegian Critics Prize for 1987. In the autumn Hymnic Dance was premiered by the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra. (The work has later been withdrawn.) A radiophonic production of the Illuminations was produced for Prix Italia, where it obtained "honourable mention". The same year Thoresen participates in a symposium in Baghdad on archaic music, and he receives the Lindeman Prize for outstanding composition.
Narrative for Saxophone Quartet composed 1988, commissioner unable to perform the work. Appointed Professor of composition at the Norwegian State Academy of Music, moves to Oslo. Symphonic Concerto for Violin and Orchestra is nominated for the Nordic Council Music Prize for the second time. Lectures at the Electronic Music Studio in Stockholm on sonology. Member of the committee of Norsk Kassettavgifstfond, 1988-1989. Cantio PMCL for 4-5 singers, commissioned by the Norwegian Broadcasting Co. - TV, composed in 1989. Work on Thus begins the same year. This piece investigates Harry Partch's Tonality Diamond (Just notation) and the instrumentation of New Band (especially the Zooomoozophone). Thus premiered during the ISCM World Music Days in Oslo 1990 by New Band, for whom the work was commissioned by the Norwegian section of the ISCM. Illuminations nominated for the Nordic Council Music Prize the same year. Yr for solo violin composed for Stig Nilsson, 1991, commissioned by Rikskonsertene (NorConcert). The piece is inspired by the Norwegian hardanger fiddle idiom reinterpreted in 'Just notation' scales. AbUno commissioned and premiered by the Cikada Ensemble at the Ultima Festival in Oslo, 1992. The harmonic structure of the work based on the natural harmonics and notated with an approximation of 1/8 tune.
1993: Commission of the symphonic work Carmel Eulogies for the 75th anniversary of Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. The work is an attempted synthesis of FM-generated harmony and Norwegian folk music microtonality. First four of Helligkvad (Sacred Songs) - a series of songs for unaccompanied voice, many of them inspired by the non-tempered scales of Norwegian folk music, composed on commission by the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá'ís in Norway. Premiered at the Høvikodden Arts Centre by Anne-Lise Berntsen by the vernissage of a Mark Toby exhibition. AbUno awarded the "Work of the Year" by the Norwegian Society of Composers. Lectures at Sorbonne, IRCAM and Conservatoire Supérieure. Presentation in Paris Salle Olivier Messiaen (AbUno and Helligkvad).
