Anthony Padilla, an American pianist of Filipino-Chinese ancestry, receives international acclaim for performances of "enormous, freshness, vitality, and poetry" (Chicago Tribune). A seasoned performer since age nine, he made his debut with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra in 1983. He has since become a popular guest artist with orchestras and at concert series throughout the United States, Canada, Italy, and Germany.
Awarded the prestigious Beethoven Fellowship by the American Pianists Association in 1991, he has also won top honors from the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, the Society of American Musicians, the Music Teachers National Association, the National Chopin-Koszciuszko Foundation, the Harvard Musical Association, and the Theodore Presser Foundation.
In addition, he is also a laureate of the Walter Naumburg, the Gina Bachauer, the William Kapell, and the Cleveland International Piano Competitions.
In February 2000, he was awarded the top prize at the Concert Artists Guild Competition in New York.
A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, he served as teaching assistant for Natalya Antonova and Jeffrey Kahane, and also studied with Professor Antonova at the Gnesin Institute of Music in Moscow, Russia. Other teachers include the late Jorge Bolet at the Curtis Institute of Music, Béla Síki at the University of Washington, Donald Walker at Northern Illinois University, and Nelita True at the Eastman School of Music.
Formerly on the piano faculty at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, he is currently a professor of piano and chamber music at the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music in Appleton, Wisconsin, and Artist-in-Residence at the Bay View Music Festival Conservatory in Petoskey, Michigan. An active member of the Music Teachers National Association, he has been in demand as a presenter at both local and national levels; most recently, he presented a lecture-recital on "The Element of Humor in Classical Music" at the MTNA National Convention in Los Angeles this spring.
He is married to Korean-American pianist Sooyeon Kwon, with whom he also collaborates for duo-piano performances.
