John Mac Master
Tenor
John Mac Master Since attending the 1992 Institute for Dramatic Voices in Carmel California, tenor John Mac Master has concentrated on the lyric spinto repertoire. In the 2000/2001 season he will return to the Vienna Volksoper to reprise Hoffegut (DIE VÖGEL, Braunfels) and Grigory (BORIS GODUNOV) from his debut season, and will sing the title role in a new production of Offenbach's RITTER BLAUBART. Later in the season he takes on Manrico (IL TROVATORE) for Ottawa's Opera Lyra, and Erik (DER FLIEGENDER HOLLÄNDER) for Vancouver Opera. For L'Opéra de Montréal, he will sing PETER GRIMES, a role in which he first appeared to great acclaim for Detroit's Michigan Opera Theatre in June 2000. Also for L'Opéra de Montréal he will make his role debut as Canio (PAGLIACCI) in November 2002.

In the 1999-2000 season Mac Master created the role of "Larry" in the world premiere production of GAME MISCONDUCT for Festival Vancouver, and made his role debut as Pollione (NORMA) for the Vienna Volksoper. For the Tiroler Landestheater in Innsbruck, he created the roles of The Beast and The Liar in Langgaard's ANTICHRIST. His debut at the Stuttgart and Frankfurt operas came as Herodes in SALOME, one of his previous assignments at San Francisco Opera where he has also been heard in André Serban's production of ELEKTRA. Other roles in his expanding repertoire are Don José, Arnold (GUILLAUME TELL), Florestan, Max (DER FREISCHÜTZ), Saint-Saëns Samson, and Enée (LES TROYENS).

On the concert stage he is in demand for Beethoven Ninth Symphony (Stavenger, Norway; Llubliana Radio and Television Orchestra; Brott Summer Festival, Canada), Mahler Eighth Symphony (Edmonton Symphony) and "DAS LIED VON DER ERDE" (Winnipeg Symphony). In Toronto he was featured as Carlo in Verdi's seldom performed GIOVANNA D'ARCO for Opera in Concert, a performance acclaimed in the press for "fine legato, supple phrasing and excellent high notes".

As resident artist with New York's AmorArtis Orchestra and Choir, he appeared as tenor soloist in the Verdi REQUIEM, Britten WAR REQUIEM, Berlioz L'ENFANCE DU CHRIST, Rossini STABAT MATER and the USA premiere of the Donizetti MISERERE. He has toured Europe as JUDAS MACCABEUS with the Brno Philharmonic with performances in Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic.

Recordings include Langgaard's ANTICHRIST (Danachord), Handel's opera BERENICE (Newport Classics) and Saint-Saëns REQUIEM (Premiere Records).
