The Lopes Graça String Quartet was founded in Cascais (Portugal) with the support of the local Council. Its members are experienced chamber music players - with the Moscow Piano Quartet, one of the best Russian ensembles. LGSQ members are Xuan Du and Jing Liu (violins), Andrei Ratnikov (viola) and Guenrich Elessine (cello).
As chamber music players they have performed in many major European and Asian cities, appearing in the December Nights (Moscow), Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Berlin and Palma de Maiorca. They have performed with the Borodin Quartet, Natalia Gutman, Pavel Vernikov, C. Hommel, C. Arimany, M. Rabinovich, Dmitri Alexeiev, N. Starkman, and many other brilliant musicians.
The Quartet's repertoire include many works by Portuguese composers and it is now developing an intense activity focusing on contemporary music.
The quartet’s choice of the name “Lopes Graça” is a tribute to one of the most important Portuguese composers of 20th century, Fernando Lopes-Graça (1906-1994).
