David Scott Hamnes

Organ


David Scott Hamnes was born in Adelaide, Australia in 1971. He began learning the piano and violin/viola at the age of ten in Adelaide. In 1985 he began organ studies in Launceston, Tasmania with William Pierce, and later studied organ performance for six years with John Mallinson, Lindsey O’Neill and June Nixon at the University of Melbourne, completing the degree of Bachelor of Music in 1991, Fellowship diploma of Trinity College, London, and the Diploma in Education in 1992. He was the second organ scholar at Trinity College at the University of Melbourne under Dr Christopher Dearnley between 1992 and 1994, before he moved to Namsos, Norway, the hometown of father and Viking ancestors. In 2000 he moved to the ancient cathedral city of Trondheim, where he now works.

Hamnes is currently studying at the Australian Catholic University in Melbourne for the degree of Master of Music. He is writing a history and catalogue of Australian organ music as part of this degree. Between 1994 and 1997 Hamnes studied with David Sanger in England. Hamnes has given first performances of a number of new organ compositions by Australian, Danish and Norwegian composers, amongst others Philip Nunn, Andrew Charles Newcombe and Jakob Vejslev, and has himself composed a small number of works for the organ. In October 1999 he recorded the complete organ works of Jakob Vejslev in Dyssegårds kirke, Copenhagen.

David Scott Hamnes is working at present as Cantor in Trondheim.
