Lawrence Golan         Lawrence Golan's passion and professional mission is to bring classical music to new audiences--not only the already initiated. He founded the Atlantic Chamber Orchestra for just that purpose, and with great success. More and more first-time symphony goers are coming to his concerts and leaving with a new-found appreciation and love for classical music. Gaining national recognition for his success, Mr. Golan was recently invited by the Conductor's Guild to speak at their national convention in Houston on the subject of developing 21st century audiences.

In addition to his post as Artistic Director and Conductor of the Atlantic Chamber Orchestra, he is Principal Guest Conductor of the Bolshoi National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Uzbekistan in Tashkent, Music Director/Conductor of the Portland Ballet Orchestra, and Director of Orchestral Studies, Professor of Conducting and Conductor of the Lamont Symphony Orchestra and Opera Theatre at the University of Denver's Lamont School of Music.

Mr. Golan has conducted in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington, DC. Internationally, he has conducted in Moscow; Harrogate, England; Varna, Bulgaria; Zabrze, Poland; Kiev, Ukraine; and Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Operas that Mr. Golan conducted last season include Rigoletto and The Marriage of Figaro. This season he conducts La Traviata, La Bohème, and The Magic Flute. This season's ballets include Giselle and Paulli's comic tale A Wedding Proposal Through a Newspaper.

Lawrence Golan was brought up in a musical family. His father, Joseph Golan, Principal Second Violinist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, taught him to play the violin at an early age. His Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral studies included work with Yuval Yaron, Josef Gingold, and James Buswell. The long list of distinguished conductors with whom Mr. Golan studied at various festivals and institutes includes Seiji Ozawa, André Previn, Leonard Slatkin, Robert Spano, Jorma Panula, Gustav Meier, Mendi Rodan, Harold Farberman, and Charles Bruck. His first professional position was that of Principal Second Violinist with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra. From 1990 to 2001 he was Concertmaster of the Portland Symphony Orchestra and Director of String Studies at the University of Southern Maine where in 1999 he won the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teacher and Scholar Award. Also in 1999 he was awarded the Leonard Bernstein Conducting Fellowship at the Tanglewood Music Center. From 1998 to 2001 Mr. Golan was Music Director and Conductor of the Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Golan has recorded for the Albany, Authentic, and Entrata Record labels and has had compositions, editions, and arrangements published by both Ludwig Music and Mel Bay Publications.
