Dr. Michael Dean

Dr. Michael Dean is Assistant Professor of Clarinet and Saxophone at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau. Born in Dallas, Texas, he holds degrees in clarinet performance from Texas Tech University (Ph.D.), the University of Colorado at Boulder (M.M.), and the University of Texas at Arlington (B.M.). His teachers include Robert Walzel, Philip Aaholm, Carol Jessup, Bob Ackerman, and Jess Youngblood.
Dr. Dean is an active recitalist, soloist, chamber musician, and clinician. He was a recitalist at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City in March of 2002. On the tour that led up to the Carnegie Hall recital he performed at Rutgers University, Westminster Conservatory, Southeast Missouri State University, Illinois Central College, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and Southern Utah University. He has also given recitals and clinics at the University of Utah, Western Kentucky University, University of Kansas, University of Tennessee at Martin, University of Puget Sound, Ball State University, University of Colorado, California State University - Los Angeles, the Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis, and numerous high schools. Michael Dean appears as chamber musician and soloist on the Red Mesa Trio CD. The CD includes chamber and solo works for clarinet, violin, and piano by Khachaturian, Ives, Bolcom, and Bimstein. In addition to Dean on clarinet, the Red Mesa Trio CD features Philip Baldwin (Eastern Washington University) on violin, and Carol Stivers (UNLV) on piano. (The Red Mesa Trio CD is available at Van Cott Information Services: www.vcisinc.com/cds.htm) He is currently clarinetist with the Paducah Symphony Orchestra in Paducah, Kentucky and the Southeast Chamber Players (faculty ensemble at Southeast Missouri State University). He has also performed with the Southwest Symphony Orchestra, Nevada Symphony Orchestra, Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra of Southern Utah, the Mesquite Symphony Orchestra, the Garland Symphony Orchestra, and the Red Mesa Trio. He has performed under the baton of Shinik Hahm, Allan McMurray, Henry Charles Smith, William Reber, James Sudduth, Giora Bernstein, Robert Olson, Jerry Junkin, Ray Lichtenwalter, Louis Lane, David Cole, Murray Sidlin, Donald Nouen, Gary Caldwell, Jordan Tang, and Gerard Yun. As a clarinetist and woodwind specialist he has performed in the pit orchestras of more than thirty musicals and operas. Prior to his current faculty position at Southeast Missouri State University, Dr. Dean held faculty appointments at Southern Utah University, McMurry University and Eastfield College. While in graduate school he held teaching assistantships in clarinet at Texas Tech University, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Colorado at Boulder. For the past 23 years he has maintained an applied clarinet studio for high school students. He has given numerous clinics, performances, workshops, lecture-demonstrations, etc. at high schools, colleges, and universities. Students of Dr. Dean have won various concerto and other competitions and have gone on to schools such as the University of North Texas, Vanderbilt's Blair School of Music, University of Colorado, UCLA, Illinois State University, SMU, and Texas Tech University. He has premiered and edited several new works including Phillip Bimstein’s Half Moon at Checkerboard Mesa (for clarinet and tape) and Keith Bradshaw’s Desertscape (for clarinet and piano), commissioned by the Barlow Endowment for Composition. He recently premiered a new work for unaccompanied clarinet by Robert Fruehwald in a faculty clarinet recital on February 27, 2003 at Southeast Missouri State University. The work, entitled Terpsichore, was commissioned by Dr. Dean and his wife, Anne-Leslie, to commemorate the birth of their daughter, Veronica. Dr. Dean has published articles in WINDPLAYER magazine, the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors [NACWPI] Journal, and other professional journals. His new article, "Practice Tips A to Z" will be published in an upcoming edition of the NACWPI Journal. Dr. Dean's book, Clarinet On Campus, was published in 1997. (Clarinet On Campus is available at Van Cott Information Services: www.vcisinc.com/clarinet.htm) He has given performances, presentations, and workshops at national, regional, and state conferences including the International Clarinet Association's ClarinetFest Conference, the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors' National Symposium, the College Music Society Rocky Mountain Chapter's Conference, the North American Saxophone Alliance Region II Conference, Southern Utah University's SUU Single Reed Day, Western Kentucky University's Clarinet and Saxophone Day, Southeast Missouri Single Reed Day, and the Utah Music Educators Association Conference. Recently, in January of 2003, Dr. Dean gave a clarinet clinic at the Missouri Music Educators Association Conference. He also performed as a recitalist at the International Clarinet Association's annual international conference, ClarinetFest 2003, at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, on July 12, 2003. Michael Dean is the founder and director of Southeast Missouri State University's Southeast Missouri Single Reed Day festival for high school and college students. This year's Southeast Missouri Single Reed Day will be on Saturday, September 27, 2003. He serves as the coordinator for the NACWPI.org web page for the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors.
