Alison Baker was born in Colchester, UK. She studied at the Royal Academy of Music and trained as both a pianist and an organist. Her teachers included Peter Hurford for organ and Imogen Cooper for piano. Making her South Bank debut at the age of 14 and her Wigmore debut at 17, she went on to receive many prizes and awards, including First Prize in the Dudley Piano Competition and the John Lill Award.
Alison spent her early twenties as a concert pianist but eventually decided on a career at the organ, due mainly to her love for Bach and Buxtehude. She is currently in great demand as a recitalist: recent and forthcoming engagements include recitals in the UK at Ely, Bristol, Portsmouth, Carlisle, Ripon, Bangor and Truro Cathedrals, and for the St Albans International Organ Festival. Engagements overseas during 1998 included concerts in Germany, Sweden and Denmark. There are concerts in Sweden (Uppsala Cathedral) and Holland planned for 1999/2000. In addition to her performing schedule, Alison is frequently asked to give lectures and masterclasses and to adjudicate. She has appeared on television many times: on the most recent occasions she appeared on BBC2's Esther programme, Channel 5's Espresso and ITV's Sunday Morning. She was also recently featured in the Radio 4 discussion programme Ad Lib, with well-known British presenter Robert Robinson. Alison also works as an ensemble player, accompanist and teacher. Due to pressure of concert commitments, Alison no longer holds a regular church position, but frequently deputises at cathedrals and churches on a freelance basis. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists. Alison Baker was recently profiled in full-page articles in the British magazines The Organ and Classical Music.
