"A pianist with a marvelous touch" - Leonard Bernstein
Listen.com says he sounds like George Winston, Serge Rachmaninoff and George Shearing. His major influences are the two K's - Keith Jarret and Keith Emerson, and the three B's - Bach, Beethoven and Brahms. Not to mention generous sprinklings of Chopin, Schumann, Elton John, Rick Wakeman, and Liberace. As both pianist and composer, Bernard Weinstock builds on the great Classical tradition, with a decidedly Rock and Roll edge. Under his fingers the piano whispers, roars, weeps, proclaims, and communicates, with intensity and passion. Not one to be confined to a single musical genre, Bernard Weinstock's versatility embraces the best of the pop and classical genres; he is, as one critic noted, a pianist "who has something to say and the means to say it with". With fifteen years of professional music making to his credit, Bernard has played with some of the top names in the music and ballet fields, including Leonard Bernstein, the Alvin Ailey Dance Company, and the Eglevsky Ballet. He has scored music for Court TV, numerous TV pilots, and has appeared on both NBC-TV's Today in New York, and CBS-TV's Early Show, playing selections from his debut CD Evening - Piano Solos In performance Mr. Weinstock is a noted improviser, reinventing a now nearly lost art form. "For me, composing is a kind of magic or conjuring ", says Weinstock. "What is so thrilling about improvisation is never quite knowing what lies ahead, or what may happen as I take people on a musical journey. The audience suggests the mood to be captured and a musical story unfolds. Like an actor, it's my role to channel that mood into a compelling adventure in sound". Born in Brooklyn, New York, Mr. Weinstock began his musical studies at 7. He continued to play the piano throughout high school, studying piano with Amiram Rigai, and Edith Oppens, and theory and composition with Dr. Ed Levy. A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, Bernard was also a protégé of Beveridge Webster at the Juilliard School. Awarded a scholarship to attend the Aspen Music Festival, he concentrated on technique with William Daghlian, and continued studying theory and composition with Igor Tkachenko. REVIEWS and CITATIONS"A pianist with a marvelous touch"
"This is the kind of solo piano album that I really like - a variety of musical stylings that range from tranquil to thundering. A Juilliard-trained pianist, Bernard Weinstock chose composition over a concert career at the suggestion of one of his teachers. Recognized and commended by both Leonard Bernstein and Keith Emerson, Weinstock's influences are varied and smoothly incorporated into his own very impressive style. Although the music on "Evening" is accessible and easy to listen to, this is not commercial pop music. As with most classical music, it gets better and deeper each time it's played. Jazz and improvisational influences are there, but Weinstock's extensive classical training shines through. His technique is very impressive, and fans of good, strong piano playing and composing will enjoy this album immensely. I highly recommend it! "
